When moving abroad or living the global lifestyle, one of the most important—but often overlooked—decisions is choosing the right international health insurance plan. With so many providers and options available, it can be overwhelming to figure out what you actually need. The wrong choice might leave you underinsured or paying more than necessary, while the right plan can give you peace of mind, wherever life takes you.
Here’s a quick guide to help you navigate your decision with confidence:
1. Understand Your Coverage Needs
Start by asking the big questions:
Are you living abroad long-term or just temporarily?
Do you need worldwide coverage (including or excluding the USA)?
Are you covering just yourself or family members too?
Think about the kind of healthcare you want access to. Do you prioritize access to private hospitals, international clinics, or major global health networks?
2. Consider the Geographic Scope
Many plans offer tiered coverage areas. For example:
Worldwide including USA: Ideal for frequent travelers to the U.S. or those with ties there, but it can increase your premium significantly.
Worldwide excluding USA: Often more cost-effective, and still excellent and some plans provide full short time accident and emergency cover in the US for the occasional trip there.
Regional coverage such as South East Asia, Europe of Africa: Often the most cost-effective, and please beware of out of area restrictions and you may want to top up with a travel medical plan, possibly an annual plan. Check out the options here.
3. Look Closely at Inpatient vs. Outpatient Coverage
Most international plans include inpatient coverage (hospitalization), but outpatient benefits (GP visits, diagnostics, physio) can vary widely.
Outpatient coverage often makes up a large part of the premium. If you don’t expect regular care, a basic plan might be enough. If you prefer comprehensive protection, choose a plan with strong outpatient benefits.
4. Evaluate Deductibles, Co-pays, and Cost-Sharing
To lower your premium, consider:
Higher deductibles: You pay more before insurance kicks in.
Co-pays or co-insurance: You share a portion of outpatient costs.
Choose what fits your budget and risk tolerance.
We always say—don’t over-insure, but don’t under-insure either.
5. Check for Added Benefits and Optional Riders
Some useful extras to look for:
Dental and optical coverage
Maternity benefits
Medical evacuation and repatriation
Mental health and wellness support
At BrokerFish, we can show you how adding or removing these options affects your premium and coverage balance.
6. Look for Portability and Renewability
Can you keep your plan if you move countries again? Is it guaranteed renewable? Your life situation may change—your plan should adapt with you.
7. Ask for Expert Help
